I think a useful setup would be on the overview button menu for approach, orbit, etc. A text box where you can enter a distance to do whatever you want. You could type in 8000 and shift-click the orbit button and it would orbit 8000. The same would apply to warp, keep at range, etc. as an easier way of always setting defaults when the scenario changes.
In a very fast PvP scenario, sometimes you need to get to a certain range (that isn't a multiple of the ranges given) while maintaining transversal or not losing any range in the process, so doing right click> set default> type in distance>ok to get the distance to be 8000 is much too slow for such a scenario. I mean, it's very possible, but not at all convenient. Setting your preferred distance should be a single command. I self pilot quite a bit, but sometimes you just need to be at an exact range, to maximize your damage and safety in a fight, for example, kiting around 10k with a rail frig has you within scram range overheated and still getting great damage with 150mm rails. This is very useful, and it's difficult to manually pilot at this range without exiting scram range. The best method of doing it is a combination of self piloting and automated (automated is sometimes slow to react to changes, but its very precise). |

Closer/further to what? Currently selected target or currently selected in space or in the overview? What ever you have selected and saved as your orbit point could be person, ship, rock. Or better yet two orbit points so you can switch back and forth. Or use camera focus as one also. Having some additional controls would allow pilots to experiment more with range instead of looking up the range for weapon and selecting the closest default orbit distance. You're over complicating a very simple suggestion. I just want to see this one simple fix. Overhauling the orbit UI is a project for another expansion.
check out my earlier post, which outlines how to set it up to be much more customizable and quick while keeping the current setup's features
as an addition, the way it would tell what distance you want to use would be any value >250 is treated in meters while any value <250 is treated in km. |
